Choosing guide

How should you choose electricity-use monitors?

Read-only and plug-through devices can record indicative use without altering fixed services or proving an electrical fault.

Review the category evidence sources.

  • Smart meters: a guide for households

    UK Government · Great Britain

Supports: An in-home display shows cost and consumption near real time for electricity and every 30 minutes for gas. Regulated smart-meter accuracy and supplier billing are distinct from a consumer accessory's indicative readings.

How to choose

  • Decide whether the question concerns one ordinary plug-in appliance or an existing supplier-installed whole-home display.
  • Check rated voltage, current, load and permitted appliance types, including any restrictions on heaters or cycling loads.
  • Compare sampling interval, cumulative records, local display, export, privacy and behaviour after power or connectivity loss.

What it cannot establish

  • Existing supplier, smart-meter or appliance data may already answer a simple use question.
  • An indicative monitor cannot reproduce a supplier bill exactly, establish circuit capacity or identify an electrical fault.

You may not need this product if…

  • An existing device or a simple record already answers the decision you need to make.
  • You need a one-off professional assessment rather than repeat observations.
  • Using the product would move beyond the stated safety boundary.
