Choosing guide

How should you choose moisture meters?

Material readings can vary with construction and method; they do not establish a damp cause or treatment.

Review the category evidence sources.

Evidence sources

How to choose

  • If a competent building professional asks for readings, follow the named material, mode, location and comparison method they specify.
  • Prefer a non-invasive method when the finish, service route, coating or material is uncertain.
  • Retain the raw reading, selected mode, identified material, exact location and date instead of relying on a coloured diagnosis band.

What it cannot establish

  • Salts, metal, foil, temperature, density and mixed construction can alter a reading.
  • An isolated value cannot locate a source, show that a wall is dry or select a treatment.

You may not need this product if…

  • An existing device or a simple record already answers the decision you need to make.
  • You need a one-off professional assessment rather than repeat observations.
  • Using the product would move beyond the stated safety boundary.
